“Right on the other side of the world about as far as one can possible get from Villa Park, a team called Aston Villa plays in the local soccer competition of the small Australian town of Bundaberg.
The club began its life as a Junior team in Mid 1960’s. It was initially called Welcome Creek United as most of the players were the sons of sugar cane farmers from the Welcome Creek area near Bundaberg. When the team came to tow, however, they were often “rubbished” for being country “hicks”, so club President Les Davis, who had been born and raised in Tysley, proposed that the club be given a name that nobody could ever ridicule. Being a life long Villa supporter he proposed that the club should hence-forth be called Aston Villa. Les’ suggestion was adopted in 1969 and over the past eleven years hundreds of youngsters have put on their Claret and Blue shirts on Saturdays and have done their best to make Aston Villa the best club in Bundaberg.
By 1978 many of the youngsters that had come through the junior ranks of the Villa Club were playing marvellous soccer for the Villa men's team, but in that year Bundaberg decided to enter a town team in the newly formed Queensland State League. Eight Villa players were seduced away from the club and the first team has never really recovered.” ……….. keep reading “THE PRESENT” The above extract shows how far we have come as a club, from strength to strength, striving to move forward and grow bigger and bigger. We now have Div 1,2 & 3 Teams as well as a very strong Div 1 Ladies Team and a record number of junior teams. Congratulations to all players. If anyone is interested in finding more about the history of your club please contact the secretary Kayleen Bryan who is the niece of Les Davis. |
